Ohio Bill Emphasizes Jobs and Justice on Path to 100% Clean Energy by 2050

Energy News Network: September 22, 2021

“HB 429 is especially timely in the wake of the ongoing scandal involving former House Speaker Larry Householder and others in an alleged $60 million corruption scheme, primarily funded by FirstEnergy and affiliates, to elect Householder-friendly legislators, pass House Bill 6 and block a voter referendum on it. CLEVELAND— Reps. Stephanie Howse (D-Cleveland) and Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) will hold a press conference on Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Great Lakes Science Center to announce the Energy Jobs & Justice Act, comprehensive energy policy rooted in equity, economic development, and accountability.

The Energy Jobs & Justice Act would:

  • Launch the state’s largest economic development initiative in recent history by prioritizing clean energy jobs and environmental justice programs;

  • Center equitable policy design to ensure clean energy benefits go to those most historically and disproportionately harmed by Ohio’s regressive energy policies;

  • Move Ohio towards a more equitable clean energy future by encouraging clean energy growth, energy waste reduction, and curbing utility influence over policymaking and regulatory actions.

This legislation serves as a logical step in making clean energy work for all Ohioans and creating systems that deliver support, call attention to areas where large gaps in access and equity persist and create new policies and practices that are needed to improve outcomes.
